While posting items for reuse on Recycle This, we quite often found ourselves wondering if this or that could be composted. We would toddle off and research each item in turn and realised we were building up quite a body of knowledge about the 'yes'es and 'no'es of composting. A bit of programming for John, a bit of writing and image collection for Louisa and a bit of design work from John's brother Chris, and voila, the site was born.

Our solution was so cheap it was free. We ended up re-using a 10 gallon plastic “storage tote” that one of our house guests left. The secure lid was essential as we don’t want rodents paying a visit. Various websites recommend poking 1/4″ holes in the bottom for ventilation and drainage, although if you’re composting indoors you can poke those holes on the sides instead.

Eerst een gat graven, stro en mest erin, water geven, goed laten intrekken, nog een keer water geven en laten intrekken, aarde erop, plant erin, een soort slotgracht met een wal om de plant, dan kan je goed water geven. De plant wordt ongeveer 1 bij 1 meter.

Het eerste bloempje is er! En nu binnen een tiental dagen de eerste komkommer op tafel? Dit is mogelijk, maar het zou ook wel eens de laatste komkommer van die plant kunnen zijn. De plant is eigenlijk nog te klein om nu al vruchten te dragen. De eerste zes, zeven bladoksels worden dan ook volledig uitgeplozen, zowel zijscheuten als bloemen. Zo krijgt de plant de kans voldoende bladmassa te vormen en kan het zevende bloempje een mooie vrucht vormen.
